Handmade silk carpets are difficult to weave, especially the ones with more than 300 lines density, which causes less and less young girls like to weave it nowadays thus its art value and preservation value will be much higher in future. Nowadays, more and more people show much interest on silk carpet such as its material, designs, weaving course, size and density.  

 

1. Material:

Real off the raw silk fiber from the cocoons and only one third of the silk from the cocoons can be used to weave silk carpets. Then bind the silk fiber into silk strands. Put the silk strands into boiling alkaline water from 30-40 minutes to make it soft and later rinse the alkali and impurities by clean water.

2. More interest things about Cocoons:

Silkworm is a kind of natural insect. It comes out from 2 millimeters egg. Eggs take about ten days to hatch. Silkworms have a strong appetite, as do all lepidopteran larvae. They eat day and night, preferring White Mulberry but they also take other species of Morus and some other Moraceae. Hatchlings and second-instar larvae are called kego (毛蚕, "hairy silkworm") in Japan, or chawki in India. They are covered with little black hairs. When the color of their heads turns darker, it means that it is time for them to molt. Later instars are white, nude, and have a horn on the back. [NOTE: instar = a phase between two periods of molting in the development of an insect larva or other invertebrate animal.]After they have molted four times (i.e., in the fifth instar), their bodies turn slightly yellow and their skin becomes tighter. The larvae enclose themselves in a cocoon of raw silk produced in the salivary glands that provides protection during the vulnerable, almost motionless pupal state. Many other Lepidoptera produce cocoons, but only a few large Bombycidae and Saturniidae have been exploited for fabric production.

3. Design

Draw design on a chart and match the different colors on it so that the weavers can follow. This is a creative work. The artisans must have a blue print in their mind. Actually the finished carpet is the representation of the design. By now, there are Peking Design, Esthetic Design, Floral Design, Embossed Design, Antique Design and Chinese-Persian Design. 

  4. Weaving

Warps will be fixed on the loom rack, which is almost like a standing frame consisting of 4 bars. The warps will be looped tightly between the top bar and the bottom one. Heddles will be bound between another horizontal bar and warps. After the foundation is woven by plain silk thread the carpet knotting will start. The silk yarns will be clasped around the warps by either the Turkish Ghiordes knots (Double knots) or by the Persian Senneh knots. Then the end of the silk thread will be cut off by knife. When a raw of knots is finished the weft will run through compartment space between front and back warps. With the comb the knots and wefts will be struck hard against the wefts. It will be cut down from the loom rack after finished. The ends of the warps will be coiled up into beautiful tassels. The carpet will be sheared evenly and washed thoroughly before being sold. 

The silk yarns will be clasped around the warps by either the Turkish Ghiordes knots (Double knots) or by the Persian Senneh knots. When a raw of knots is finished the weft will run through compartment space between front and back warps. With the comb the knots and wefts will be struck hard against the wefts.

5. Size and Density

We offer rectangular, runner, square, oval and round shape silk carpets. Normal sizes of the carpets including 1’0” by 1’0”, 2’0” by 3’0”, 2’6” by 4’0”, 2’6” by 6’0”, 2’6” by 8’0”, 2’6” by 10’0”, 2’6” by 12’0”, 3’0” by 3’0”, 3’0” by 5’0”, 3’0” by 10’0”, 4 ‘0”by 4’0”, 4’0” by 6’0”, 5’0” by 8’0”, 6’0” by 9’0”, 8’0” by 8’0”, 8’0” by 10’0”, 10’0” by 10’0”, 9’0” by 12’0”, 10’0” by 14’0”, 12’0” by 18’0”.

Normal knot accounts per foot include 120 lines (about 100KPSI) , 130 lines, 140 lines, 260 lines, 300 lines, 400 lines, 500 lines, 600 lines, 700 lines, 800 lines, 900 lines, 1000 lines (about 6400KPSI).
